Modal verbs in Slovak language
Slovak language has also the modal vers which express the modal circumstances concerning verb that follows, for example whether it is a voluntary action, an indispensability action, or obligation, a possibility or a permitted action. Slovak language has the folloving modal verbs.
chcieť – to want
smieť – to be allowed to/ pemitted
môcť – to be allowed to/ to be willing
musieť – to have to
vedieť – to know
We can conjugate these verbs in the folloving way :
chcieť smieť môcť musieť vedieť
chcem smiem môžem musím viem
chceš smieš môžeš musíš vieš
chce smie môže musí vie
chceme smieme môžeme musíme vieme
chcete smiete môžete musíte viete
chcú smú môžu musia vedia
Now we use them in sentences
Ja chcem jesť. I want to eat.
Smiem si sadnúť ? May I sit down ?
Môžem ti to povedať. I can tell it to you.
Musím skoro vstávať. I have to get up early.
Vedel som to. I knew it.
